When you have weighed all the pros and cons of introducing a new family member, and found yourself in favor of doing so, it's time to find that reputable breeder!  Here are some suggestions to take into consideration in your search:

*  Make sure you find someone who will answer all your questions, is friendly, accessible, and polite; one with whom you would develop a rapport.

*  Reputable breeders are concerned with the health of their animals, and will do appropriate health screenings on their dogs.

*  New owners can expect to be given pertinent health records, feeding instructions, and answers to any of their questions.  Breeders love to receive follow-up on their puppies, from letters, to pictures, and phone calls!  The breeder has invested a tremendous amount of time, work, and love into their babies and is interested in how they develop physically and mentally, any difficulties in the owner-dog relationship, and health problems.

*  You can expect the breeder to ask YOU some questions too!  It's important that the right puppy go to the right family, so you can expect inquiries into family lifestyle, home situation, employment, past history of companion animals, etc.  These can be as informal as conversation, or can be an application, or even a home visit!

When you have finally found the right breeder, you've found not only someone to purchase your puppy from, but hopefully a friend for life!  When that well-adjusted, socialized and friendly puppy goes to his new home, you know the breeder has done his or her part!  Now it is the responsibility of the new owner to train his pet.
